[Protecting Artaeus had seemed—still seems—like a perfectly logical decision. Taking the brunt of the damage is just his job, and beyond that, Artaeus has dealt with so much in the last few days that Ari wanted to shield him from as much of this mess as he could. Admittedly, nearly dying wasn't part of the plan.
When Ari comes to, he's utterly disoriented. He's on the ground and everything aches. At first he can't bring himself to move, and when he shifts, he feels a rent in his armor pressing painfully against his ribs. For a dizzying second, he thinks it's snowing, and his mind can't wrap around how that could be possible until he registers that it's ash. From the trees, maybe?
He finally forces himself into motion, sitting upright with a groan that he can't quite hold back. Something is wrong with the couter on his left arm—he can't manage to bend his elbow correctly. He brushes that off, though, and tries to get a look at everyone else. They're okay, right?]
